Which brass should I choose?
Here you will find an overview of the different types of brass we offer—polished, untreated, polished untreated, and brushed brass—along with their unique characteristics. This guide aims to simplify your selection process, helping you choose the option that best suits your home. Additionally, we provide care instructions for each finish.
Brushed Brass:
One advantage of brushed brass is its resistance to fingerprints and minor scratches, making it a practical choice for daily use in the home. Unlike untreated brass, products with a brushed finish will not patinate or darken over time, ensuring they maintain their original appearance with minimal maintenance.
Polished Brass:
The polished surface is lacquered, ensuring that its appearance remains unchanged over time and making it easy to maintain. This lacquered finish prevents oxidation and darkening, meaning the handle retains its luster and will not develop a patina.
Cleaning Polished & Brushed Brass:
For maintenance, it is recommended to wipe the fittings with a clean, slightly damp cloth to remove stains or fingerprints. Avoid cleaning agents, as they may contain chemicals that can negatively affect the surface.
Untreated Brass:
Untreated brass has a matte and robust surface that retains its natural appearance from the manufacturing process. This finish showcases the true color of the brass and allows it to patinate over time. Patination is a natural reaction that occurs when solid brass is exposed to moisture and oxygen in the air, resulting in a patina that both protects and extends its lifespan. Over time, handles and knobs in untreated brass develop a unique character and become increasingly beautiful. These products are made of solid brass.
Polished Untreated Brass:
Polished untreated brass means that the surface is initially polished to give a glossy finish but without any protective lacquer. Initially, the product has a luster similar to polished brass, but since the surface is untreated, it will patinate over time and develop a living patina that darkens. This natural process gives the product a dynamic and evolving aesthetic while protecting the brass and extending its lifespan. The difference between polished brass and polished untreated brass becomes noticeable only after some use when the latter begins to patinate.
Cleaning Untreated Brass:
To preserve and care for handles and knobs in both untreated and polished untreated brass, it is recommended to wipe them with a clean, slightly damp cloth to remove dirt and fingerprints. Avoid using cleaning agents, as they may contain chemicals that can negatively affect the surface. If you wish to restore the original shine of the brass, you can gently polish the surface with a soft cloth. However, be aware that this may remove the natural patina that has developed over time.
